All overcurrent protection technologies are not created equal. Fuses are current interruption devices, whereas Raychem Circuit Protection PolySwitch Resettable Devices (PPTC Devices) are non-linear thermistors that limit current. Whether the designer needs to “disable” or “isolate” the circuit will determine which device is most appropriate for a specific application.
For example, a single-use fuse is recommended on an LCD inverter because a failure in the circuit means the complete assembly must be replaced.
On the other hand, the resettable PPTC device is a logical solution for protecting telecom and network equipment, where immediate resumption of operation is critical once the fault has been removed. |
